BuildingFootprintUSA – New Coverage and Updating Coverage in our Latest Release

 

We are very excited to get our latest release of BuildingFootprintUSA data out to our clients.  You can evaluate our release from a strictly numeric point of view – 9 million additional addresses geocoded to rooftop accuracy, 3 million more buildings with height, and millions of additional buildings linked with high accuracy ground elevation calculations.  

 

All of these numbers demonstrate that our data helps our users solve location problems in insurance, telecommunications, location based marketing and other industries.  What we also want to focus on is the strides that we take to keep our data up-to-date.

 

In this release we have enhanced nearly 100 counties of existing coverage with significant updates.  For example, in the Denver Colorado area you’ll notice thousands of additional buildings in our coverage as we model this fast growing region.  Our previous coverage is in yellow and all new buildings are layered below in red.

This is our normal – every quarter we spend equal attention to keeping our data up-to-date AND building out new coverage.

 

What drives these updates?  There are three ways that we update our coverage.  First, our local community partners push data to us when they are running enhancement programs.  Secondly, we are constantly drawing data from thousands of open data sites where communities publish their GIS data.  Lastly, we are creating new data ourselves using the latest available LIDAR and high resolution imagery sources; this allows us to fill in areas of new growth.

 

In an update a city could see a 1, 2 or even 5% increase in the number of buildings.  These improvements can happen anywhere; in Miami you can see recent growth captured.with new buildings shown in red.  

Updates come in many forms – new industrial buildings, a new apartment building that has been added to an existing complex, or the removal of buildings that have been torn down.  Sometimes we are updating our data even before it is reflected in commercial imagery shown on various mapping sites.

Our last type of update is when we are adding height information to buildings.  You may need height for your application and use in Telco planning, commercial real estate, or emergency services.  We have methods to accurately enrich existing buildings with height information. For example, we added height data to over 250,000 existing buildings in one metropolitan area alone.
